How to Practice the Gospel Exercises

An introductory guide

Why These Exercises?

The Gospel Exercises are not about self-accusation but about discernment—learning to recognize what keeps us from being with the Lord Jesus Christ and what turns our attention away from Him. They aim to cultivate a posture of openness to God’s word, so that the Holy Spirit may shape our hearts and daily actions.

For Individuals

Set aside a specific day each week and plan at least thirty minutes in quiet, free of interruptions. It does not have to be the exact same time every week, but regularity helps—body and mind learn the rhythm of prayer and meditation. You may include your own prayer, a hymn, or a psalm. Keep a notebook for short insights and resolutions that arise during prayer.

At the Beginning of the Journey

You may sometimes feel resistance, disagreement, or the temptation to think, “This cannot be lived in today’s world,” when reading the Gospel. That is understandable. Remember that the words of the Lord Jesus Christ are God’s words. Even when they seem hard or impractical, keep a stance of openness and a desire to receive them. If we refuse to acknowledge the Gospel as truth, the exercises—and the journey itself—lose their meaning.

Corrections Welcome

If you notice any error or inaccuracy in a Scripture reference or interpretation within an exercise, please forgive it and share your feedback. Our goal is to spread the Gospel in its pure form, so that it may help not only you but others as well.

Practicing in a Small Group

For group practice, gather a few people who trust one another. Choose a moderator (the role can rotate, or be held by someone more experienced). Agree from the start on ground rules: mutual consideration, confidentiality, and a spirit of peace. In your discussions, avoid argument and judgment; instead, encourage one another and seek what leads to peace.

Structure of a Gospel Exercise

  1. Opening Prayer — the individual prays in silence; in a group, the prayer is read aloud.
  2. Reading of Scripture — read all passages listed at the beginning of the exercise (aloud in a group).
  3. Brief Silence — one minute of focused meditation on God’s word.
  4. Reflection — read the entire reflection (aloud in a group).
  5. Moment of Quiet — space to grow still and receive what was read.
  6. Discernment — read the “Discernment” section (aloud in a group).
  7. Individual: contemplate and look for concrete life situations named by the text.
  8. Group: share personal experience and how each person understands the text.
  9. Resolution — read the closing resolution (aloud in a group).
  10. Closing Prayer — end with the Lord’s Prayer (“Our Father…”).
  11. Supplementary Questions — if uncertainties arise, look up related passages or continue the conversation.

A Final Encouragement

May these exercises be a path of growth—both personal and shared—and lead you to receive the Gospel with an open heart and to live it each day in your deeds.

“And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:7)
